How can we integrate the commemoration of violent events into the culture of remembrance and strengthen coexistence in a diverse society? The conference “Need for Remembrance: Conference on Plural Remembrance in Migration Societies” explores the opportunities and gaps in dealing with cultures of remembrance. In interconnected contributions, scholars, members of affected communities, and artists discuss cultural and political commemoration of racially motivated violent events in panels, workshops, and other formats.
In Austria and beyond, numerous questions arise today: Why are certain victim groups of the Holocaust, such as the Roma* and Sinti* communities or the Yenish people, still scarcely present in the collective memory? Why are people who are targets of violence not sufficiently heard when it comes to decisions about memory politics?
The first European Congress of the CPPD is being held in cooperation with Tangente St. Pölten. In addition to panels, workshops, and a networking meeting for professionals, the “Dynamic Memory Lab,” a temporary exhibition space on the theme of “Codes of Memory in Sinti* and Roma* Communities,” will be presented and expanded with a regional perspective. With this European focus, the CPPD responds to the growing need for transnational networking in memory concerns.
