On 7 October 2024, the Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD) and RomaTrial e.V. are holding a very special event:
On the anniversary of the 7 October 2023 Hamas terror attacks in Israel, and the consequent war in Gaza, the focus of the event is on the complex and ambivalent topic of grief.
Throughout the night, we will observe the many layers and dimensions of grief that incorporate its unique tension: as a cultural phenomenon that shapes collective remembrance, memory, and identities, and as a deeply felt, individual emotion. In conversation with our guests, we will seek to approach a shared understanding of the complex linkages and facets of grief.
The long Night of Grief will employ various formations to encourage reflection and discussion; through talks with experts and CPPD members, and through artistic interventions, we hope to reveal the cultural, psychological, and social aspects of grief and their impacts on both society and individual.
At the heart of the event is the question of how societies grieve, and whether collective grieving could even be a unifying force in light of conflicts and polarisation.
The Night of Grief will attempt to make discussions possible where dialogue currently seems impossible, thus fostering a form of remembrance: a deep reckoning with the violence that shapes societies, the impacts of which will continue to do so. The way that we orchestrate and organise our grief thus offers a perspective for a time after the war.
