The Dynamic Memory Lab ‘Nước Đức. Vietnamese-German Migration History(ies)’ examines Vietnamese-German migration history and explores the question of how history is remembered and recounted – or, conversely, repressed and concealed. The exhibition focuses on the memories and experiences of the Vietnamese-German community, which have unfolded and intersected over several decades, navigating the tensions between flight and contract labour, between North and South Vietnam and East and West Germany, and between a history of violence and self-empowerment.
The two curators, Dan Thy Nguyen and Nina Reiprich, will guide visitors through the exhibition, explaining historical contexts and offering insights into the development of the Dynamic Memory Lab. They will demonstrate how different memories and experiences are interwoven and can be interpreted as a shared frame of reference. In doing so, they invite visitors to question boundaries in discourses on memory, to highlight gaps and contradictions, and to understand the history of Vietnamese-German migration as part of a shared, multi-perspective history. Afterwards, they will answer questions and engage in conversation with visitors.
Following stops in Rostock and Chemnitz, the exhibition opened on 11 March 2026 as part of the CPPD Festival at the Altonaer Museum and will run until 6 July 2026.
The Dynamic Memory Lab is the CPPD’s central exhibition format. It understands the culture of remembrance as a living and evolving process and responds to the dynamics and specific needs of contemporary cultures of remembrance in the 21st century.
